UWLA—Academics Overview

Academics--Fostering Creative and Intellectual Growth

Each aspect of UWLA’s academics centers on our Mission.  We strive for excellence and are dedicated to providing a diverse group of traditional and non-traditional law students with a legal education that prepares them to pass the bar exam and achieve a successful career in law.
Through a challenging curriculum, an effective policy of academic standards, and a knowledgeable, experienced and supportive faculty, UWLA’s academics serve the needs of the Los Angeles community as we prepare the law professionals of its future.

Juris Doctor

The School of Law awards the Juris Doctor Degree to students who satisfactorily complete a minimum of 85 semester units of law study, including all required courses, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 on the 4.00 scale and who have met all other residency and scholastic requirements.

Faculty

Our faculty is comprised of a highly qualified and respected group of both full-time and adjunct law professionals.  All of our instructors are practicing attorneys or sitting judges and are dedicated to the success of their students.  Through programs that prepare students for the rigors and joys of practicing law, our faculty provide relevant instruction, challenge each individual to strive, offer support, and act as mentors.

Programs

UWLA’s academic programs are designed to prepare both full-time and part-time students for a successful legal career.  Small classes with a high level of faculty-student interaction and an effective and relevant in-class curriculum are coupled with practical training such as clinical placement, the Legal Aid Clinic, moot court, internships, and customized independent study opportunities.

Academic Standards

In order to provide for the success of its students and the integrity of its standing in the law school community, the UWLA School of Law has thoughtfully developed and implemented academic standards which comport with the mandate and policies of the State Bar of California, its Committee of Bar Examiners, and the School's accrediting agencies.
These academic standards are applied uniformly and consistently to all students and include standards relating to graduation, attendance, examinations and grading, qualifications for honors, and requirements to remain in good academic standing.
