JAMES E. NOBLES, ESQ

The University Of West Los Angeles School Of Law has changed my life, that of my family’s, and perhaps for generations to come.

Prior to thinking about law school I had decided to go to optometry school to become an Optometrist.  I had a background in that field, so I figured becoming an Optometrist made sense.  However, that would have required me to uproot my family and move to Berkeley, California. Then, one day, a patient walked into the eye clinic where I was working.  She happened to be an attorney.  We engaged in conversation about law and law school. She mentioned that there were a couple of law schools, which had night programs.  I had no idea such was the case. So I began to think; if accepted to one of these schools, I could obtain my professional degree and become an entrepreneur without having to move my entire family to Berkeley, where we would undoubtedly struggle. Well, I found UWLA.

I entered UWLA in May of 2001. Right away I fell in love with the law. The instructors, all of whom I was impressed with, were practicing attorneys, retired attorneys or judges. After my first semester of contracts, torts, and legal research, I knew that the law was what I wanted to do and that UWLA was the right school.

However, law school was no picnic. There were times when I thought I would never make it, but my professors believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Exam times were the most challenging. But I was committed and determined to succeed, and with the support from the faculty I was able to stay in the saddle.

All my professors at UWLA were more than willing to help in and out of the classroom.  Although I graduated in 2005 and passed the bar in 2006, UWLA and its instructors have never left me. They are still glad to assist me in my professional career.

Today, I am the Assistant General Counsel for Irwin Naturals, a diversified corporation that markets dietary supplements all over the world. As counsel for the company, I handle complex transactions for manufacturing, distribution, marketing and media, as well as business litigation. I’m also counsel for the company’s record label, of which I perform most of its legal functions. I deal with an array of entertainment law matters, negotiating and deal making. Much of what I learned from taking entertainment law at UWLA is useful to me on a daily basis.

The University Of West Los Angeles School Of Law well prepared me for this multifaceted and diversified practice of law. Because of my education there, I was able to jump in and be an effective lawyer on day one. Even while dealing with more experienced and seasoned attorneys on the other side of the table.
