UWLA Town Hall Announcement
04/30/2020
Dear UWLA family:
I hope that this letter finds you and your family doing as well as possible during these uncertain times currently engulfing our world both financially and more importantly, medically. I write to you today on a lighter note, regarding positive news concerning our UWLA community and it is with great pleasure that I can communicate the following to you.
First, I want to officially recognize the recent outstanding performance of Professor Glassman's team at the Traynor California Appellate Advocacy Moot Court Competition. Third year students, Natalie Hairabedian & Edgar Portillo won second place overall (First place for a Respondent's Brief) in the moot court competition. UWLA prides itself on it's practitioner focused programs. I want to commend Professor Glassman's leadership in teaching our students exactly what he practices everyday in court. He empowers them to not only achieve victories like this in competition, but more importantly as advocates for their clients in court and in practice.
Second, I am proud to announce that we now have the approval necessary to offer our eligible students Federal Funding under the Dept. Of Education Title IV Regulation known as Federal Financial Aid.
As many of you know, this h·as been a long time coming, but'it is now .. a reality. Our Deans and administrative personnel have worked very hard to make the availability of federal financial aid loans a part of the foundation of UWLA. Now you, our students, can benefit and be under less hardship to be able to pay for your education. Our Director of Financial Services will be sending an email to all of our students. detailing how they can apply for the federal financial aid.
We know that this is extremely positive and welcomed news in these stressful and turbulent times. Now our students can focus on their studies and remaining healthy for themselves and their families. Our mission is to provide elite, quality, affordable education and hopefully this achievement evidences our commitment to that mission.
Third, once California's EXECUTIVE ORDER N-33-20 is lifted UWLA's SFV campus will reopen at its new location 19900 Plummer St. Chatsworth, CA 91311. You have told us the problems and concerns you have had with the former SFV campus and we have heard you. Our new SFV campus contains more classrooms, more quiet study areas, additional parking, and an improved commercial grade Wi-Fi capacity for students.
I am proud of our Institution and its stakeholders' resilience. I especially want to take this opportunity to recognize our faculty, staff administrative personnel, and students. Worthy of our family culture, we are facing these frightening times together and as a collective body. When we realized that distance learning was going to be the sole means of continuing to deliver our educational services, we notified our faculty. They immediately stepped up and without any reservation, undertook the training to make certain that our students receive an equal or greater educational experience through the distance learning modality. I want to commend our outstanding inspirational faculty. Our staff is now working entirely remote. Our goal was to make certain that the University continues to operate functionally and fluidly. We meet every day virtually to maintain the continuity and flow of our operations and do what it takes behind the scenes to make UWLA function effectively. We are still working out the kinks but with our collective good will and some patience, I am confident that we will emerge from this dark hour, even stronger and more knowledgeable about our Universities' environment and how to navigate the future of education.
There is strength in knowledge, but we are even stronger through tolerance, preparedness and faith in one another. UWLA is a fifty-four year old institution and we continue to care for one another as a large extended family.
Thank you for choosing to be part of the UWLA family. Please stay positive, safe and healthy and we will get through this together, I assure you.
Sincerely,
Robert W. Brown
President
