Professor Robert Barrett, who teaches professional responsibility, business organizations, and civil procedure at the University of West Los Angeles (UWLA) School of Law, is about to bring his academic bona fides to a global audience.

Having recently been selected to participate in the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Program, Professor Barrett will be sent abroad to serve as an expert consultant on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at an overseas educational institution for a period of two to six weeks. This program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is intended to benefit both the host institutions and the participants, who bring back invaluable international experience to their own institution.

Professional Barrett is both honored to have been chosen and excited to participate. “I hope my experiences with our diverse population at UWLA will enable me to contribute to an institution in another country, while at the same time I expect this opportunity will make me a better teacher when I return,” exclaimed Barrett. “Fulbright Specialists are both ambassadors for the American way, and students learning what works in other countries.”

Beyond the classroom expertise he can share, Professor Barrett brings a wealth of experience to his Fulbright appointment. He was a member of the State Bar of California's Business Law Section Education Committee, and a former Chair of the State Bar's Standing Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct (COPRAC). And his many years in litigation practice and business law in Los Angeles have provided him with truly hands-on, real-world practical knowledge, which he is able to impart to his students.

While Professor Barrett does not know where his first posting will be, Fulbright Specialists serve a three-year term during which time they are eligible for two different postings. This is not the first opportunity he will have to share with students in a foreign country. Under UWLA’s auspices, he gave a guest lecture at Sias University in Zhengzhou, China. He was also a Visiting Professor at Minzu University in Beijing for a summer semester.

Professor Barrett looks forward to sharing his Fulbright Specialist experiences with his UWLA students and colleagues at the conclusion of his postings.
