Making a Difference One Business Student at a Time: UWLA Business Professor Christian Teeter Brings His Passion for Teaching

August 25th, 2023

Christian Teeter has always had a passion for learning and education. If he was not teaching, he admits he would most likely be working full-time at a university or in a public service capacity within a governmental institution. “My entire career, I have focused on the ideals of serving others,” explained Professor Teeter. “I started teaching as a part-time career in 2004. Having an impact on the students in my classroom proved very rewarding. I was immediately hooked.”

Today, Christian is an Adjunct Professor at the University of West Los Angeles (UWLA), where he has been teaching courses such as Economics, Finance, and Statistics part-time for the past three years. In the relatively short time he has been teaching, he has already received some prestigious recognition. He received the President’s Award for Faculty at UWLA and an Excellence in Management Award from the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked before UWLA.

As a native of Santa Clara, California, Christian developed a lifelong interest in business from his father, who was an entrepreneur in the semiconductor industry, and a passion for helping others from his mother, who worked as a nurse. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory and completed his Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University, where he majored in History, receiving Phi Beta Kappa academic honors. He completed his advanced degrees in Business and Education at the University of Southern California.

Committed to Serving Others

Christian has continued to pursue his goal of serving others and driving academic excellence through teaching and scholarship. “At UWLA, I have an opportunity to make a difference in my students’ lives,” stated Professor Teeter. “Our students are very special, and it is a privilege to serve them. This work is tremendously fulfilling. I can connect the application of course materials to real-world issues, reinforcing the significance of their education.”

At UWLA, Christian teaches part-time to both undergraduate and graduate-level students across multiple learning modalities. He is a big proponent of the university’s newly designed online programs, which allow for tremendous flexibility for students who are juggling personal and professional responsibilities.

The Value of a UWLA Education

As a strong proponent of higher education, Christian believes in the value of UWLA’s programs. “The School of Business at UWLA is rooted in business principles that reinforce their practical application,” said Professor Teeter. “Our course designers have ensured that students are able to develop a sharp set of skills that they can apply on the job, in addition to knowing relevant business theory. This is especially important today as employers are looking for candidates with up-to-date skills from new hires.”

Christian is proud to be a part of UWLA’s faculty and has high hopes for the university’s growth and future trajectory. “I have tremendous confidence in President Brown’s leadership in moving the institution forward to new areas in business, attracting new students, obtaining a wide listing of academic partners, and continuing to focus on offering cutting-edge educational opportunities to students,” added Professor Teeter.

Impacting Students and Fellow Teachers

As a professor, Christian has impacted many students and even a few of his fellow faculty members. One student that stands out in his mind is Tunisia Johnson. “I worked closely with Tunisia to help her understand the issues of independent and dependent variables in statistics,” explained Professor Teeter. “Using media, film, and classroom discussions, she was able to grasp the complexities of experiments, hypotheses, and their relationships with different variables. As a result of this extra focus, Tunisia mastered the ability to apply regression analysis in making major business decisions. This was a very rewarding experience for both of us.”

Christian is also proud to have helped a fellow educator. “Working with Jay Frykberg, Provost and Dean of the UWLA School of Law, was a real privilege. I was thrilled to know that my economics and accounting classes positively impacted his work and daily activities as an educational leader,” stated Professor Teeter. “For any students thinking about attending UWLA, I would say this university provides a great opportunity to work with an outstanding faculty and a bright group of students in a highly stimulating academic environment that offers working professionals educational skills that will be invaluable in the workplace.”
